Shriners Hospitals have key role in child care
Wednesday, September 12, 2007

The importance of Shriners Hospitals and the role they are able to play in helping burn victims and patients with orthopedic problems was made clear during a presentation given recently at Lakeshore Chapter 59, Order of the Eastern Star, in Slidell.

Members and guests of Lakeshore Chapter 59, Order of the Eastern Star, in Slidell, enjoyed the presentation by John Williamson, recorder of the Jerusalem Shrine Temple in Destrehan, and Dan Caro, member of Slidell Lodge 311 and also a Shriner, made the presentation to members and guests of Lakeshore Chapter 59.

The two showed a short film and spoke on how Shriners Hospitals for Children is a 22-hospital pediatric health-care system that provides excellent, no-cost medical care to children with orthopedic problems or burn injuries.

Caro is personally familiar with the care provided at the Shriners Hospitals. At the age of 3, Caro was burned over more than 70 percent of his body. After receiving services for 17 years at Shriners Hospitals, Caro now enjoys an active and useful life. Even though he lost all of his fingers to the burns, he plays drums with a band at the House of Blues in New Orleans.
Diane Smith, worthy grand matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, State of Louisiana, also spoke on behalf of the Eastern Star Shriners Hospitals Transportation Fund. This fund provides financial aid for the transportation of children to any Shriners Hospital at no cost.
